Plaster workshop,  Urgent Care Course

Introduction
CUCP established the Urgent Care course in 1999.
It is a one-year course and prepares candidates for UCPEX.
The UCC and UCPEX are both part of the Urgent Care training programme, and compulsory for CUCP Fellowship from 2012.

Aims
1.To give doctors knowledge, skills and attitudes to safely practise Urgent Care in a supervised setting.
2. To provide reference material for self-directed learning.
3. To emphasis certain attitudes:
 i) Recognition of one’s limitations.
 ii) Knowing when to call for help.
 iii) To reassess current practice in the light of latest knowledge.

Format
- 40 lectures (approximately 10 of lecture notes, background articles and 76 hours of lectures on DVD), all via distance learning.
- Three weekend practical courses - ACLS (16 hours), a practical skills workshop weekend, and a combined trauma and communications weekend. These weekend sessions are held in Auckland.
- Lecture review questionnaire.

Note:
CUCP may issue exemptions to the weekend courses as follows
- ACLS to trainees who hold current and equivalent ACLS certification.
- Trauma day of trauma / communications weekend to trainees who hold current and equivalent ATLS or EMST certification or have passed the University of Auckland Immediate Care paper.
- Communications day of combined trauma / communications weekend to trainees who have passed the RNZCGP's - PRIMEX examination or received equivalent communications training.

Assessment
(i) Course Modules
After viewing the required DVDs and reading the resource material for each module and write a case study.
(ii) UCPEX
UCPEX is administered by CUCP. It is based on the DVDs, folders, and weekend and ACLS courses. The exam is normally held on a weekend in late November, and consists of an OSCE and written paper. There is a separate fee of $520 plus GST to sit UCPEX.

CUCP Certificate
Participants are eligible for an CUCP Certificate when they have successfully completed:
- The questions and case studies
- The weekend courses
- A 16 hour or other CUCP approved ACLS course
- A trauma and communications weekend.

Duration
The Course runs from March to November.
Applications are accepted throughout the year.
While the course material can be studied in any order, the compulsory Practical Skills and Trauma / Communications weekends are held on fixed dates (see Calendar).
This may determine whether late applicants decide to try to 'catch up', to defer until the following year, or to spread study over two years.
